Local Priorities Theft Of Motor Vehicles Message

Dear Resident,

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding the theft of motor vehicles,  which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

We know that people can be concerned about the personal and financial impact of having their vehicle stolen, which is why we will pursue and arrest those who break the law. Please consider taking the following steps to keep your vehicle safe:

  • Check that your vehicle is locked and secure every time you leave it. Thieves often look for easy opportunities to steal from vehicles. They will usually try the handles until they get lucky and find one that has been left unlocked.

  • Keep your keys safe, out of view when at home and away from your front door.

  • If you have a keyless entry vehicle, keep the key well away from the vehicle while at home and turn off wireless signals on your fob when its not being used. Consider putting the keys in a screened or signal blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag and check that it is still working every few months.

  • Park your vehicle in a private garage if you can. If you don’t have access to one, try to park in a well –lit open space.

  • Try to use public car parks that are part of the police approved Park Mark safer parking scheme.

  • Secure your number plates with tamper resistant screws to avoid them being stolen and used by others.

Full advice and guidance on this, and other crime types is available on the Metropolitan Police website.

To local residents of Barnes, vehicle crime is one of our more prevalent offences occurring on the ward.
Over the past couple of years i have assisted in putting up notices regarding protecting yourselves against vehicle crime.
Now with the new Met Engage i thought this would be a good idea of trying to inform more of you regarding this crime.
When you park your motor vehicle leaving them, please make make sure you leave them locked and secure. I can appreciate that you all lead very busy lives, and on occasions we can all think that we have carried out certain tasks when we haven't.
A couple of years ago i conduct an operation in Barnes where i walked down a number of roads checking parked motor vehicles, I found 5 motor vehicles that were insecure. On this occasion i was able to identify owners and make them aware so that they could be secured without loss.
Can i also ask that you all check your motor vehicles, making sure that you do not leave property on show in them. Either put the property out of show in the boot or remove it totally.
Don't leave even the smallest of things such as a carrier bag within your motor vehicle as certain individuals find this all to tempting, and they will not hesitate in causing damage to your property that you have work hard for.
By acting on this advice I'm sure we will see a reduction of vehicle crime on the ward.

Should you see anyone acting suspicious in the street or wearing face coverings please call the police, please do not hesitate we will respond.

If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.met.police.uk/, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.
